My Purpose for Money

by luna on October 31, 2012

I’m in the final stages of editing and designing my book, Wild Money, which means that after a year of not reading ANYTHING, I now have room in my brain to pick up a book.  The book that I have open on my desk right now, earmarked and underlined, and so delicious that I only read one page at a time, is Danielle LaPorte’s The Fire Starter Sessions: A Soulful + Practical Guide to Creating Success on Your Own Terms. It’s juicy, well designed (which makes my inner artist very happy), full of great quotes and rich in inspiring content.

Her chapter on money is breathtaking.  She says, “You are the economist of what matters to you”.  Think about that!  The only thing that really matters in your personal economy is what matters to YOU.  What I notice when working with clients is that many haven’t stopped to ask themselves what matters.  Does exploring new cultures matter?  Is education your highest priority?  Or is it personal growth that floats your boat?  Honestly, if you put the basics like housing, food, and transportation aside, what do you spend money on, and what does that tell you about what you value?

Consider this:

“When you establish your purpose for money,
you have a rudder to help guide your purchases, investments, donations, savings—
all the things that you do with money.
You also motivate yourself to go get what you want the most.”

–Danielle LaPorte

Inspired by Danielle’s writing, I’ve written my own list, titled “My Purpose for Money”.  I will use it as a compass to guide and remind myself of what I want.  I will drench this list in prayer and intention.  Here is my list:

My Purpose for Money

  • Own a home that reflects my love of beauty, sustainability and community
  • Travel around the world with my family, building a global tribe and making a difference
  • Create a vibrant, energizing, perennial business of money savvy products and services that transforms lives at all income/assets levels
  • Develop myself as a painter, musician and author
  • Support creatives worldwide- buying their creations and investing in their dreams and projects
  • Provide extraordinary experiences for my children that help them broaden their minds and awaken their potential
  • Generously give to family, friends, community and organizations in a way that empowers and connects
  • Teach week long retreats in Costa Rica, Bali and other magical places (and have an additional week to vacation afterward!)

Now it’s your turn…. What is your purpose for money?  I would love to hear your thoughts!
